Build Your Race Calendar Smartly: A Guide for Indian Runners
A smart race calendar isn't just a list of events — it's a structured plan with one peak race, carefully chosen tune-ups, and enough recovery between each to actually improve.

The Most Common Race Calendar Mistake
Booking every race that looks good is not a race calendar. It's a random collection of events that will leave you perpetually fatigued, never peaking, and wondering why you're not improving.
A smart race calendar has a purpose: to put you in the best possible shape at the moment that matters most.
Step 1: Choose Your A Race First
Your A race is the single event you're building the entire season around. Everything — training load, recovery, tune-up races — is designed to deliver you to this start line at 100%.
Questions to ask when choosing your A race:
- What distance am I most excited about?
- Is there a race that feels just beyond what I've done before?
- Can I logistically prepare for this race (travel, cost, time off)?
Step 2: Fill in B Races Strategically
B races give you real race experience and fitness tests without the full taper of an A race. Choose B races 3–5 weeks before your A race for shorter distances, or 6–8 weeks before for equal or longer distances.
Examples:
- A race: 50K trail ultra in March → B race: 21K road half marathon in January
- A race: Full marathon in February → B race: 10K time trial in December
Step 3: Use C Races for Joy
C races are just for fun. No taper, no pressure, no data analysis afterwards. India has dozens of community runs, charity 5Ks, and local events that are perfect for this.
India's Racing Calendar Structure
The main Indian road running season runs October to March. Trail season is year-round, with a monsoon focus in the Western Ghats and Himalayan foothills (July–September).
Plan accordingly — your A race in February means your peak training load hits in December and January, which is also when most C and B races are happening. Be selective.
