Running Your First Ultra: Set Yourself Up Right

An ultramarathon — any race beyond 42.195 km — is a different animal from a road marathon. The training principles that work for road racing can actually hurt you when applied to ultras. Here are the most common beginner mistakes.

Mistake 1: Running Too Many Miles, Too Fast

Ultra training is about time on feet, not speed. Most beginners obsess over weekly mileage and forget that 6 hours of easy hiking and running builds the same aerobic base as 80 km of aggressive road running — without the injury risk.

Mistake 2: Ignoring Nutrition Practice

You will need to eat real food during an ultra. Practise eating while running from your first long run. Common ultra foods in India: dates, bananas, boiled potatoes with salt, peanut chikki.

Mistake 3: Not Hiking the Uphills

Hiking steep uphills in an ultra is not giving up — it's a strategic energy save. The runners who try to run every hill in the first 30 km are the ones who DNF at the halfway point.

Mistake 4: New Gear on Race Day

Blisters, chafing, and uncomfortable hydration packs are the top three DNF causes in Indian ultras. Whatever you plan to wear on race day, you should have already run 50+ km in it during training.

Mistake 5: Building Mileage Too Quickly

The 10% rule (increase weekly mileage by no more than 10% per week) exists for a reason. Most beginner ultra injuries come from adding long runs too fast.

Mistake 6: Under-Sleeping During Training

Ultra training breaks your body down — sleep is when it rebuilds. Aim for 8+ hours during your peak training weeks.

Mistake 7: No Recce of the Course

If the race allows it, recce the trail before race day. Knowing what the terrain looks like at km 40 changes how you pace the first 20 km.
