What Makes the Ladakh Marathon Special

The Ladakh Marathon is unlike any race in India. Held in Leh at an altitude of approximately 3,500m above sea level, it's the world's highest marathon — and completing it requires preparation that no flat-land training can fully replicate.

The landscape is otherworldly: high-altitude desert, monastery views, Himalayan peaks on every horizon. Runners consistently describe it as the most memorable race of their lives.

Distance Categories

The Ladakh Marathon typically offers:

  • Full Marathon (42.2 km) — for experienced high-altitude runners
  • Half Marathon (21.1 km) — the most popular category for first-timers
  • 7K Fun Run — open to all fitness levels

The Altitude Challenge

At 3,500m, oxygen availability is roughly 65% of sea level. This affects everyone, even experienced runners. You will run 15–30% slower than your sea-level pace — and that's fine. Racing at altitude is not about time; it's about finishing.

Acclimatisation is mandatory. Arrive in Leh at least 2–3 days before the race. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, walk rather than run for the first 24 hours, and sleep as much as possible.

Training for the Ladakh Marathon

If you're running at sea level, you can't fully replicate altitude conditions. However:

  • Build a strong aerobic base (long runs of 25–35 km for half marathon)
  • Practise running on uphills — Leh's course has elevation change
  • Consider altitude tents if your budget allows, or train in hill stations (Manali, Mussoorie, Shimla) in the weeks before the race

Logistics

  • Location: Leh, Ladakh
  • How to reach: Fly into Leh Airport (Kushok Bakula Rimpochhe Airport) from Delhi or Mumbai — book flights early, they sell out
  • Stay: Leh town has guesthouses, hotels, and camps at all price points
  • Best time to visit: September (race is typically held in September)

Register

The Ladakh Marathon typically opens registration early in the year. Check BookMyRace and the event's official page for 2026 registration dates. This event sells out — don't wait.
